"WHO AM I ?" - Ramana Maharshi

If the mind, which is the instrument of knowledge and is the basis of all activity, subsides, the perception of the world as an objective reality ceases. Unless the illusory perception of the serpent in the rope ceases, the rope on which the illusion is formed is not perceived as such. Similarly, unless the illusory nature of the perception of the world as an objective reality ceases, the vision of the true nature of the Self, on which the illusion is formed, is not obtained.
The mind is a unique power (sakti) in the Atman whereby thoughts occur to one. On scrutiny as to what remains after eliminating all thoughts, it will be found that there is no such thing as mind apart from thought. So then, thoughts themselves constitute the mind.
Nor is there any such thing as the physical world apart from and independent of thought. In deep sleep there are no thoughts: nor is there the world. In the wakeful and dream states thoughts are present, and there is also the world. Just as the spider draws out the thread of the cobweb from within itself and withdraws it again into itself, in the same way the mind projects the world out of itself and absorbs it back into itself.
The world is perceived as an apparent objective reality when the mind is externalized, thereby forsaking its identity with the Self. When the world is thus perceived, the true nature of the Self is not revealed: conversely, when the Self is realized, the world ceases to appear as an objective reality.

*WORDS OF WISDOM* - Ramana Maharshi

This evening, D.S. Sarma, asked Bhagavan: “In Western mysticism three definite stages are often spoken of — viz., Purgation, illumination and union. Was there any such stage as purgation — corresponding to what we call sadhana — in Bhagavan’s life?”

Bhagavan replied, “I have never done any sadhana. I did not even know what sadhana was. Only long afterwards I came to know what sadhana was and how many different kinds of it there were. It is only if there was any object or anything different from me that I could think of it. Only if there was a goal to attain, I should have made sadhana to attain that goal. There was nothing which I wanted to obtain. I am now sitting with my eyes open. I was then sitting with my eyes closed. That was all the difference.

I was not doing any sadhana even then. As I sat with my eyes closed, people said I was in samadhi. As I was not talking, they said I was in mauna. The fact is, I did nothing. Some Higher Power took hold of me and I was entirely in Its hand.” Bhagavan further added, “The books no doubt speak of sravana, manana, nididhyasana, samadhi and sakshatkara. We are always sakshat and what is there for one to attain karam of that? We call this world sakshat or pratyaksha. What is changing, what appears and disappears, what is not sakshat, we
regard as sakshat.

We are always and nothing can be more directly present pratyaksha than we, and about that we say we have to attain sakshatkaram after all these sadhanas. Nothing can be more strange than this.

The Self is not attained by doing anything, but remaining still and being as we are.”

*WORDS OF WISDOM* - Ramana Maharshi

"If the root cause of desire is discovered, there won’t be any bondage. That root is the Self. If one knows one’s Self, whatever desires may come or go, they will not worry one,” said Bhagavan.

*WORDS OF WISDOM* - Ramana Maharshi

16-9-45 Afternoon

A visitor asked, “What should one, who is an absolute beginner, do in this (i.e., spiritual) line?”

Bhagavan: The very fact that you put this question shows you know what to do. It is because you feel the want of peace, that you are anxious to take some steps to secure peace. Because I have a little pain in my foot, I am applying this ointment.

Visitor: What is the method to be adopted for securing peace?

B: The conception that there is a goal and a path to it, is wrong. We are the goal or peace always. To get rid of the notion that we are not
peace is all that is required.

V: All books say that the guidance of a Guru is necessary.

B: The Guru will say only what I am saying now. He will not give you anything you have not already. It is impossible for anyone to get what he has not got already. Even if he gets any such thing, it will go as it came. What comes will also go. What always is will alone remain. The Guru cannot give you anything new, which you have not already. Removal of the notion that we have not realised the Self is all that is required. We are always the Self. Only, we don’t realize it.

*Points to Ponder* - 'The mind cannot seek the mind' - Ramana Maharshi

D.: How to check the mind?
M.: Will a thief betray himself?
Will the mind find itself?
The mind cannot seek the mind.

You have ignored what is real and are holding on to the mind which is unreal and also trying to find what it is. Was there mind in your sleep? It was not. It is now here. It is therefore impermanent. Can the mind be found by you? The mind is not you. You think you are the mind and therefore ask me how it is checked. If it is there it can be checked. But it is not. Understand this truth by search. Search for unreality is fruitless. Therefore seek the reality , i.e., the Self. That is the way to rule over the mind. There is only one thing Real!

Be your self

Muruganar`s words about 'Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi'

Muruganar entered the Old Hall. Prostrating to Sri Bhagavan he noticed that worship had been offered to some books decoratively heaped, garlanded and placed in front of Sri Bhagavan, near the sofa. He realised it was Saraswathi Puja day. As he glanced at the garlanded books and then at the serenely seated Master, his face broke into an amused smile. Noticing this, Bhagavan gestured enquiringly. Muruganar's relationship with Bhagavan was unique. He knew he was in the presence of the Reality clothed in human form, available to all as the spiritual guide.
Containing his amusement with great effort, he said: "Bhagavan! To have offered puja to the sacred books in your presence amuses me. Imagine that a bunch of the best variety of sugar cane was squeezed, crystal sugar of the purest quality made out of the juice and a human form was made with it. Now, picture the superb human form made of this best sugar on the one hand and the sugar-cane-waste on the other! Bhagavan, you are the essence of Truth. These books, however sacred they may be, are just like the sugar-cane-waste. They have offered puja to the juiceless canes while the most beautiful sugar-form, YOU, are seated just here!" Saying this, Muruganar laughed. Bhagavan too had a hearty laugh.

'Aksharamanamalai' - RAMANA MAHARSHI

Arunachala! the cool moon of grace! My mind is troubled by the intense heat of tapathryam( three troubles arising from "Physical" or Adhi-Bhautika, "Divine" or Adhi-Daivika and "Internal" or Adhyaatmika sources) Kindly place your hands of ambrosial rays and cool my mind. My mind though containing the nectar of immortal life is shut like the ambol (Tamil name) flower. Make it blossom by your grace!
C: This supplication here is also similar to the prayer made in verse 27 praying for the destruction of the ego-knot. In verse 27 the knot of ego was compared to the lotus bud and Arunachala as the Sun which makes it blossom. In this verse the mind is compared to ambol bud and Arunachala to the moon which makes it blossom. It is in the fitness of things that the pot (kalasham) of nectar which had been tightly closed with the sealing by shell lac gets opened only through the ambrosial rays radiated by the one who is himself the embodiment of immortality. Hence Arunachala the moon of grace radiating the nectar of immortality is invited by the poet to open it. Pure consciousness, which is ever present as ‘existence’ in the heart of people itself is the grace manifesting itself as the form of Arunachala Siva. Hence ‘Kathirattam’ meaning radiant hand is used. Same idea is expressed in the benedictory verse of 'Aksharamanamalai' as ‘karunakaram’ and in verse 51 of AMM as ‘arutkai’.

*WORDS OF WISDOM* - RAMANA MAHARSHI

“What there is, is one state only; you may call it turiya or turiyatita or what you like. The wakeful state (jagrat), the dream state (swapna) and the state of deep sleep (sushupti) — these three states go on changing like the scenes in a cinema. All the three are ideas of the mind. That which is beyond these three, and which is real and permanent, is the Self itself. That is the state called the Fourth, the turiya, state. In common parlance, people talk of the ‘Fourth State ‘and of ‘Beyond the Fourth State’, and so on, but strictly speaking, there is only one state.”

*Words of Wisdom* -Ramana Maharshi

I came to you thinking of feeding on you however I find that I have ended up becoming your food and thus I have become established in absolute peace.
C: The word ‘sappadu’ refers to both food and experience. The word ‘shantam’ refers to the ultimate spiritual attainment. Ego gets totally consumed by 'Arunachala' who is the 'Self 'and becomes an integral part of Him. This cessation of ego is the highest end leading to absolute peace. Hence it is referred to as ‘shantamaipovan’ . The idea is to indicate that the annihilation of the separate identity is the experience of Siva. So long as there is even a tiniest particle of belief of oneself as separate identity remains there cannot be the experience of Divinity or cosmic consciousness. The same idea is expressed in all the texts which prescribe the act of becoming ‘food of God’, ‘the loss of individuality’ or ‘surrender’ (saranagathi or prapathi) as the ultimate instrument for realization. Hence, as Bhagavan has mentioned in the very first verse of 'Aksharamanamalai' the true grace of God is the destruction of the ego. Saint Nammalvar has written a verse which looks like an exact replica of this verse. Death of individuality in fact confers immortality on the devotee as also affirmed by Manickavachagar in Tiruvachakam (When He mingled with me, My alienation from me ended. My kith and kin – Products of puissant Karma -ceased to be. My delusion of the phenomenal world passed away. My word and deed perished). In such a stage all the aspects of one’s existence including the limiting adjuncts of personality along with their roots and seeds get destroyed. (After the cessation of ego, his mind takes the shape of 'sivanandalahari' (blissful waves of Siva consciousness) not even an atom of the vasanas or memory traces remain in His mind. A question may arise as to whether there is any residual personality after self-realization. The answer is that it appears as existing only in the eye of the beholder; it is not real.
In Self-Realization all the aspects of the personality get dissolved in consciousness. This truth is known by all those who have known about Bhagavan’s Self-experience.

You are Brahman. You are fullness. You exist on all sides - -Ribhu Gita Chapter Two

Nidagha: Revered Ribhu! In this state of affairs, who qualifies for Brahman-hood? Please tell me especially that Knowledge which has come out of the words of Sankara.
2. Ribhu: You, indeed, are Brahman. You, indeed, are the Supreme Guru. You, indeed, are of the nature of space. You are Brahman. There is no doubt of this.
3. You, indeed, are of all manner of being. You, indeed, are the meaning of all this. You are changeless. You are devoid of all. You are the Witness. You are ever without a witness.
4. You are time. You are devoid of all. You are ever without a witness. You are devoid of time. You are time. You are ever Brahman, the mass of Consciousness. You are the nature of all Truth. You are Brahman. Of this there is no doubt.
5. You are the Truth. You are the accomplished. You are the ancient One. You are the liberated; you are Liberation. You are ever immortal. You are God. You are peaceful. You are without afflictions. You are Brahman. You are purnam (the fullness). You exist on all sides.
6. You are equable. You are also the Truth. You are ancient. You are set forth by the word "truth" and these other words. You are devoid of all limbs. You are ever firm. You are Brahman. You are full and perfect. You are the high and the low.
7. You are free from the perplexing misconception of all the phenomenal world. You arise in all the beings that ever are. You are ever without sankalpa. You are Brahman. You are fullness. You exist on all sides.

Be your self

*Words of Wisdom* - Ramana Maharshi

A young Mysorean asked:

How did I get this body?

M.: You speak of ‘I’ and the ‘body’. There is the relationship between the two. You are not therefore the body. The question does not occur to the body because it is inert. There is an occasion when you are not aware of the body - namely, in deep sleep. The question does not arise then. Nevertheless you are there in sleep. To whom does the question arise now?

*Points to ponder* - Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi no 499

'ALL ARE 'JNANIS' IN BHAGAVAN'S VIEW'

D.: So it amounts to this. To see a 'Jnani' (The knower of Brahman or Pure consciousness) is not to understand him. You see the jnani’s body and not his 'jnanam' (Pure awareness or Brahman). One must therefore be a 'Jnani' to know a 'Jnani'.

M.: The 'Jnani' sees no one as an 'ajnani' (One who knows not what Brahman is). All are only 'jnanis' in his sight. In the ignorant state one superimposes his ignorance on a 'Jnani' and mistakes him for a doer. In the state of 'jnana', the 'Jnani' sees nothing separate from the Self. The Self is all shining and only pure 'jnana'. So there is no 'ajnana' in his sight.

There is an illustration for this kind of allusion or super-imposition. Two friends went to sleep side by side. One of them dreamt that both of them had gone on a long journey and had strange experiences. On waking up he recapitulated them and asked his friend if it was not so. The other one simply ridiculed him saying that it was only his dream and could not affect the other.
So it is with the 'ajnani' who superimposes his illusive ideas on others.

Regarding 'ajnana' in early youth and 'jnana' at the present time, Sri Bhagavan said: There is no 'jnana' as it is commonly understood. The ordinary ideas of 'jnana' and 'ajnana' are only relative and false. They are not real and therefore not abiding. The true state is the non-dual Self (Truth-Being-Existence-Consciousness and Bliss). It is eternal and abides whether one is aware or not. It is like 'kantabharana' (The necklace worn around one's neck) or the tenth man (Oneself).

'SELF-INQUIRY' - RAMANA MAHARSHI: Self-Inquiry is the one, infallible means, the only direct one, to realize the unconditioned, absolute Being that you really are.

D. But is it not funny that the ‘I’ should be searching for the ‘I’? Does not the inquiry, ‘Who am I?’ turn out in the end an empty formula? Or, am I put the question to myself endlessly, repeating it like some mantra?
M. Self-Inquiry is certainly not an empty formula; it is more than repetition of any mantra. If the inquiry, “Who am I?” were a mere mental questioning, it would not be of much value. The very purpose of Self-Inquiry is to focus the entire mind at its Source. It is not, therefore, a case of one ‘I’ searching for another ‘I’.
Much less is Self-Inquiry an empty formula, for it involves an intense activity of the entire mind to keep it steadily poised in pure Self-awareness.
Self-Inquiry is the one, infallible means, the only direct one, to realize the unconditioned, absolute Being that you really are.

“Dakshinamurthy is an aspect of Shiva as a guru of all types of knowledge and bestower of jnana.

This aspect of Shiva is his personification as the supreme or the ultimate awareness, understanding and knowledge. This form represents Shiva in his aspect as a teacher of yoga, music, and wisdom, and giving exposition on the shastras. He is worshiped as the god of wisdom, complete and rewarding meditation.
The Story of Silence
One story is that he sat with four disciples in front of him. They were all learned people; they had read all the Vedas and Upanishads and heard all that was to be heard, but they still couldn’t realize the truth. So they came to Dakshinamurthy and requested him to explain the highest Brahman (the unmanifested God). He just sat there in silence. After a while they got up, bowed down and said, “Swamiji, we have understood.” And they went away, because only in silence can God be explained.”

"If the mind is happy, not only the body but the whole world will be happy. So one must find out the way of becoming happy oneself. One cannot do this except by finding out about oneself by Self-Inquiry. To think of reforming the world without doing that is like thinking of covering the whole world with leather to avoid the pain caused by walking on stones and thorns when the much simpler method of wearing leather shoes is available. When by holding an umbrella over your head you can avoid the sun, will it be possible to cover the face of the whole earth by tying a cloth over it to avoid the sun? If a person realizes his position and stays in his own self, things that are to happen will happen. Things that are not to happen will not happen. The shakti that is in the world, is only one. All these troubles arise if we think that we are separate from that shakti.”

All that we need do is to keep quiet. Peace is our real nature. We spoil it. What is required is that we cease to spoil it. We are not going to create peace anew. There is space in a hall, for instance. We fill up the place with various articles. If we want space, all that we need do is to remove all those articles, and we get space. Similarly if we remove all the rubbish, all the thoughts, from our minds, the peace will become manifest. That which is obstructing the peace has to be removed. Peace is the only reality.

"Dattatreya" is the universal Guru - Ramana Maharshi

"Dattatreya is the universal Guru, isn’t he? And he has said that the whole world was his Guru. If you look at evil you feel you should not do it. So he said evil also was his Guru. If you see good, you would wish to do it; so he said that good also was his Guru; both good and evil, he said, were his Gurus. It seems that he asked a hunter which way he should go, but the latter ignored his question, as he was intent upon his aim to shoot a bird above. Dattatreya saluted him, saying, ‘You are my Guru! Though killing the bird is bad, keeping your aim so steadfast in shooting the arrow as to ignore my query is good, thereby teaching me that I should keep my mind steadfast and fixed on Ishwara. You are therefore my Guru.’ In the same way he looked upon everything as his Guru, till in the end he said that his physical body itself was a Guru, as its consciousness does not exist during sleep and the body that does not exist should therefore not be confused with the soul — dehatmabhavana (the feeling that the body is the soul). Therefore that too was a Guru for him. While he looked upon the whole world as his Guru, the whole world worshipped him as its Guru."

[A visiting Pandit] asked, “Life itself becomes extremely hard in some places. How is one to perform sadhana (spiritual practice) in such places?”
Bhagavan replied, “The place is within you; you are not in the place. When you are in all places, where is the question of difficulties in some places, and not in others? All are within yourself. How can they cause you difficulties?” “But we get no peace of mind at all in some places,” he protested and Bhagavan replied, “That which always exists is peace. That is your natural state. You are not able to recognize your natural state. You get deluded by aberrations which are unreal and feel sorry that there is no peace. If you realize your self, all places will become equally suitable for sadhana.”
